Award winners, Featured members July 3rd, 2009
Merle Prosofsky took not one but two trophies home this year from the 2009 PPOC national competition and convention. Best in the Architecture class for the image below, and one of the big ones – Commercial Photographer of the Year! Photographers of the Year are selected from among the entries whom had all four of their submissions selected for exhibit in the competition. It is a very fierce contest and very prestigious to win. Please enjoy Merle’s images and what he has to say.

“Home of Art” 2009 Best Architecture by Merle Prosofsky, MPA
I was totally delighted to win the 2009 commercial photographer of the year! My entry this year was a real mixed bag and I ended up submitting two images that were shot for specific jobs and two that were driven by my passion to create personal, experimental works.
The first client image ‘Home of Art’ (image above) was an architectural shot for Avenue Magazine’s home feature and showcased a stunning, art-filled residential interior. By happy coincidence I found that the homeowner was an old friend from the photography world, so it was great to re-connect.
The second client image ‘Hot!’ was created for an industrial manufacturing company. In this instance, I was very fortunate to have a really cooperative subject who just kept on welding at the very specific and crazy angle I requested until we got the shot. Just one more example of a great corporate environment, happy employees, and a grateful photographer!

I love to shoot food and chose a martini as a personal project, with the final image also destined for a studio promotional piece. Luckily not much vodka was wasted in the creation and the olives made for great snacking over the several hours required in lighting this deceptively simple subject that I call ‘Blue Martini’.

My final and favorite image of the entry is a photocomposite created from several images, shot in the famous Paris graveyard, Pere Lachaise. This eerie, dramatic, yet strangely beautiful place provided an absolute wealth of subject matter. The final result ‘Here Rests’ captures the mood and personal feeling that I experienced that day and I definitely plan to make another photographic journey to Paris!
