“Hanging Out” by John Beesley, MPA, SPA
These are the images that were awarded Portrait Photographer of the Year. I always try to show a range of diversity. The black and white “Hanging Out” (photo above) is an image I took while visiting Malta. It captures the essence of the island and the people known as the friendliest people in the world.
Also in black & white, are three ballet students posed up and very fitting of the title, “Strength, Courage and Wisdom”.

“The Answer” is a story telling image of girl feeling the pain and sorrow from a letter that has just been delivered. This warm toned image with the textures, visual depth, along with the sophisticated clothing and posing make this image a one-session creation (photoshop work), I couldn’t get up and leave it to the next day.

The last image is also a form of story telling with warm and cool tones working together. The river leading in from the distance, giving way to a magnificent apple tree talking up most of the frame and providing perfect balance to the girl, which is just like an added bonus to the image. The subject puts everything into perspective and adds the needed, human element.

The first image- I find there is little separation between the woman and the background…I had to look hard to notice her. I thought that a separation is technically required…

In general, you are right, although there are times when you can successfully break the rules. There could be a few factors going on beyond your control though. Most web browsers ignore colour profiles and these files shown on the blog have been copied and rendered down to a different size. On the trip down, the math in the Rendering Intent can pull some tricks. Also, all monitors are the weakest in the reproduction of the deepest zones of an image and you not only should calibrate your monitor, but you should also do a manual black point check to be sure you are looking at a reasonable facsimile of the image. At the judging of the images, the equipment is very carefully calibrated and profiled and viewed on 27″ monitors at full resolution with no interpolation. That is the best way to view any of these images and in fact the only time you can truly make an informed decision on the quality of the file and fully appreciate it.

I absolutely love the dancers. The dark images just capture me.
