Best group portrait “Celebration of Life” by Julie Robichaud-Martin
This was in every way, a “celebration of life” portrait session. I did this family session the day before the mother, Julie, was to begin chemotherapy, again, for her persistent breast cancer. Even after her double mastectomy, the cancer came back. She wanted to remember this moment in time, before her hair fell out again, for yet another long journey. A lot of women in her family have lost the battle to breast cancer. When I heard her story and understood the strength it takes to go through challenges like these, with a beautiful smile like hers, I knew what kind of portrait I wanted to take. This photo was her 2008 Christmas card. How awesome is that?! Julie is still undergoing chemotherapy treatments, not a day goes by that I don’t think of her and pray for her.
Oh, about technical aspect of this image, I just make sure I have a clean white background and strong backlighting to get that nice rim light. It makes a high key portrait look better. The rest is all about photographer to client relationship…that is the key.
