THE MILITARY ACCREDITATION
(Images and story by Chris TT Thombs). As it is Remembrance Day a lot of people start thinking about the military, and November 11th. I thought I would share some info, and thoughts about No. 44 - Military Life accreditation, “The Military Accreditation”. Why would I write a blog about this accreditation, and why does this accreditation matter to the regular members of PPOC? In my opinion military life is part of the Canadian story that needs to be documented. It also gives you a chance to educate yourself as a photographer by working towards getting the accreditation which will test you both as a photographer and as a project manager.

I get it honestly though…my mom always went above and beyond when decorating for Halloween and our house was usually the spookiest on the block. WHY YOU SHOULDN'T SHOOT ON TRAIN TRACKS
In Canada, railways are private properties and walking on or along the train tracks is an act of trespassing. When we say along, we mean 50 feet from either side of the tracks. It is a federal offence under the Railway Safety Act and, although fines vary by provinces, they can reach up to $10,000. In short, it is illegal to use train tracks, active or inactive, as a shooting location without explicit permission from the railway company.

Renowned Photographer Retires
After an amazing 45 (!) years, Brian Boyle - the ROM’s senior photographer - will be retiring at the end of August. His last day will be Friday, August 30th.
Brian started at the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) in 1974, and during his tenure, he has helped lead the transition from the analog 20th century to the digital 21st century. When he started at the ROM, photographers shot everything on black and white film, using 4 x 5” cameras. Since 2002, Brian has worked entirely with digital cameras and has led the ROM in establishing itself as a premier institution in the digital world.

Meet Victoria West, PPOC 2019 Portrait Photographer of the Year!
Victoria West has been a portrait photographer for over 10 years and runs her studio, Victoria West Portrait, in Oromocto, NB. She joined the PPOC in June of 2017 and holds the regional titles of PPOC Atlantic 2017 Photographic Artist of the Year and PPOC Atlantic 2018 Portrait Photographer of the Year. In 2019 she represented Team Canada at the World Photographic Cup and brought home a Bronze Medal in the Portrait category. She has now added the title of PPOC Portrait Photographer of the Year to her 2019 accomplishments.
